Today was another super student-directed day, and with the motivation of this group of students, I was able to spend a lot of time asking probing questions and enjoying the excitement for science bubbling through the room! We started by reviewing the Western Scientific Method. Then we overviewed the basics of experimental design. Students practiced using the words quantitative, qualitative, and control group into their vocabulary. Students spent a lot of time thinking of a research question, conducting background research, developng a hypothesis, and planning out their experiment's materials and steps.
After this work was approved, most students were able to get to work on their experiements! Some students will need to conduct the experiment at the start of next week's class. There were some really interesting findings made, and I am excited to see their presentations come together and be presented next week!
If you'd like to check out any photos from my Thanksgiving trip to Panama, you can find them on the site home page.
I'm on the hunt for a few experts to join our class in person or via video chat. If you or someone you know would be interested, please let me know!
Professional(s) who use microscopy or microbiology in their work to teach the 5th graders about their job [Needed sometime before winter break]
A professional who know a lot about brains! (Bonus if you have any way to show the 4th graders a human brain...) [Needed sometime before winter break]
Someone who uses drones for their work (or potentially recreation) to talk about their job with the 5th graders (Bonus if you could fly for us!) [Needed during 3rd quarter]
As we begin our school year and face new challenges, we are seeking new ways to enrich your child's education both in person and virtually. Our current wish list includes a set of classroom cameras (~$100 ea) and Rubiks Cubes ($12)! Please click on the link below to donate to my Boise Foundation Account. [LOWELL/GATE/GABRIELLI,AUDREY]
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THOSE WHO ALREADY DONATED!
IT WILL BE PUT TO GOOD USE RIGHT AWAY!
(I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
