The 1st grade class was busy with action and inspiration today! Students chose a world-changing topic that they wanted to teach others about and got to work. Many students were enamored with the idea of writing a commercial for FreeRice.com that could be shared with their homeroom classmates to teach them how they can donate food to people in need just by answering trivia questions. We worked together to create an outline of main points, set time constraints, and discussed how to capture an audience's attention. Some students were able to film this week, and others will film next time they come to GATE.
The students that weren't making commercials decided to write books to teach others how to make a difference in the world or about world-changers! I met with this group to discuss how to create an outline with a beginning, middle, and an end. The students were confused why they couldn't just start making their books right away, but later realized how helpful an outline can be in the planning process. The books will be copied so each author can give a copy to their teacher and to their school librarian to share with other students.
A student adjusted a circle map to be a heart map! Reformers are strong, help our community, and make peace.
Thank you so much to everyone that has donated to the GATE classroom! There have been several anonymous donors who don't get to receive a fun thank you card in the mail, so please know how much we appreciate your generosity. We have already been able to get power tools, craft supplies, and TONS of Lego bricks! Two new drones will also be added to our fleet in time for the 5th/6th grade drone programming project!
As we begin our school year and face new challenges, we are seeking new ways to enrich your child's education both in person and virtually. Our current wish list includes a set of classroom cameras, a Tello drone kit, Rubiks Cubes, graphic novels, and more enriching art and tech! (I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
