Our drone selfie!
We had SO much fun today learning computer coding through CodeMonkey.com! The students started their day by checking out a video about the basics of coding and used that video and their previous experience to create a circle map. They then got started on a series of Code Monkey courses where they learned about sequencing and looping, block coding, and some students even got to try some text-based coding that functioned like a rudimentary Java! I could hardly get them to stop to go to recess, they loved it so much!
We were able to squeeze in a little bit of work at the end of the day working on the Drone Blocks app, where the 1st graders were able to effortlessly transition to creating block code for programming drone flight. Unfortunately, we only got one set of code off the ground in the time that we had due to some glitches, but we will make time to revisit Drone Blocks before the end of the year.
What really excited me about watching the students learn today, is that every student was able to find a level of challenge, implement "I'm Stuck" strategies, and persevere through struggle. Their Code Monkey accounts will be accessible for 30 more days with the trial I have, so they will have access via their school Google log-ins for that time. Please let me know if you'd like me to help you find your 1st grader's sign-in information for them to access Code Monkey at home.
The last class will be May 15th.
As we begin our school year and face new challenges, we are seeking new ways to enrich your child's education both in person and virtually. Our current wish list includes a set of classroom cameras (~$100 ea), craft supplies of all sorts, and Rubik's Cubes ($12)! Please click on the link below to donate to my Boise Foundation Account. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THOSE WHO ALREADY DONATED!
IT WILL BE PUT TO GOOD USE RIGHT AWAY!
(I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
