This week at GATE we started our day by reviewing he big questions we have been talking about. You can see their answers written in the image below:
What is an idea?
Where do ideas come from?
How have ideas changed the world?
What does an idea need?
After our discussion, we had to take a quick break from our Idea work because 4 students were randomly interviewed for a district-level clarity training. While those students were interviewed, the other students practiced making connections by playing with OuiSi cards. OuiSi cards are pieces of square cardstock with beautiful images on them. Today's challenge was to place the cards on the table in a way that showed the ways the cards connected. The students connected cards based on color, shape, type, temperature, and patterns.
After recess and snack, we were able to get to our big piece of work for the day. There were a lot of building materials placed on the counter of the classroom. Students were able to look at the items, but not touch them. They spent several minutes pondering how they might use the materials to create something new. After spending time pondering, they were able to choose materials and get to work on a new invention. In retrospect, offering balloons as a material was probably not my best choice as they were very enticing, and most inventions ended up incorporating balloons... haha We will try again next week, with different materials (aka not balloons) set out as options.
Most students were able to add their inventions and answer two reflection questions in their Book Creator portfolios.
We're all set on building materials and snacks for the time being! Thank you so much for all of the generous donations!
As we begin our school year and face new challenges, we are seeking new ways to enrich your child's education both in person and virtually. Our current wish list includes a set of classroom cameras (~$100 ea) and Rubiks Cubes ($12)! Please click on the link below to donate to my Boise Foundation Account. [LOWELL/GATE/GABRIELLI,AUDREY]
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THOSE WHO ALREADY DONATED!
IT WILL BE PUT TO GOOD USE RIGHT AWAY!
(I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
