This week we finally were able to get our hands on the drones (purchased through a grant from the Idaho STEM Action Center and from amaaaaazing GATE parent donations!) The 6th graders learned about drone safety and practiced writing code to program the drones using the DroneBlocks flight simulator. Some of the students were even able to test out their programming at the end of the day. Next week, we will practice pre-flight safety checks, troubleshooting and we will get to spend an hour flying the drones! This will lead us into the meat of the unit, where the students will explore the relationship between art and technology by creating a choreographed and costumed drone performance video.
And in case you missed it, the James Webb Space Telescope reached its final location while the 6th graders were in class on Monday! We were able to watch the countdown hit 0!
Thank you so much to everyone that has donated to the GATE classroom! There have been several anonymous donors who don't get to receive a fun thank you card in the mail, so please know how much we appreciate your generosity. We have already been able to get power tools, craft supplies, and TONS of Lego bricks! Two new drones will also be added to our fleet in time for the 5th/6th grade drone programming project!
As we begin our school year and face new challenges, we are seeking new ways to enrich your child's education both in person and virtually. Our current wish list includes a set of classroom cameras, a Tello drone kit, Rubiks Cubes, graphic novels, and more enriching art and tech! (I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
