Today the 2nd graders started a new unit exploring the question, "Are spiders artists?" They began work in their Book Creator portfolios answering the following questions:
What is art?
What/who are a artists?
Are spiders artists? How do you know?
Are webs abstract art? How do you know?
The students will revisit these questions at the end of the unit. Next the students created a double bubble map (the new version of a Venn Diagram) comparing and contrasting spider webs and art. These diagrams were also added to their digital portfolios.
The students really enjoyed a special Choice Time with computers as a reward for showing exceptional behavior walking in the hallway the last time they were at GATE. They also got introduced to my favorite childhood book, Be Nice to Spiders and finished the day comparing and contrasting timelapses of a spider web being created and an abstract painting being made.
Next week, we will dive into the question of, "What is abstract art?"

TV PAGE is a parent group that advocates for the needs of gifted children in the Treasure Valley. You can find their online presence on Facebook, or you can join their upcoming meeting on Thursday November 17th at 7pm at Grace Jordan Elementary School.
As we begin our school year and face new challenges, we are seeking new ways to enrich your child's education both in person and virtually. Our current wish list includes a set of classroom cameras (~$100 ea) and Rubiks Cubes ($12)! I jsut put in a request to the tech department to get 6 iPads for our classroom, so I will cross my fingers that they have some on hand.
