Today in the 3rd grade class, we wrapped up the Invention Convention process with some reflection questions and a pitch video on the students' Book Creator portfolios. The new students in the class were able to create their portfolios and learned the basic functions to create a cover page. We also started a new unit today where the students will be creating challenging art/craft projects and engineering challenges with the goal of practicing productive struggle, letting go of perfectionism, and using strategies to independently get out of the Learning Pit. I've already seen growth through this year, and we are going to keep working on these invaluable skills. I would love for the focus of several of our art/craft pieces to have a "trash to treasure" theme, so if anyone has expertise in this form of art, let's talk!
Today's craft was kumihimo, a Japanese braiding style. Each student made a marudai, or a round loom that they are able to keep. I will also keep several in the classroom for students to use during Choice Time if they would like to continue the practice or learn more complicated weaving patterns.
I also was able to tell the students some exciting news today... I'M PREGNANT! for an ultrasound photo and other snapshots of my winter break, be sure to check out the site homepage.
