Question of the Day: What is a teacher's job versus the students' job?
Most students were able to present and give/receive feedback on their leadership/career presentations today. Some students also got a good leg up on their project reflection. By next week all presentations and reflections should be posted on their digital portfolios. (link below)

or contacts to help us put together a half to whole day (9:45am-1:15pm) exploring different careers and points of interest at BSU
Question of the Day: What happens when you take time to reflect?
The day has finally arrived!! Today the 5th graders got to enjoy all of their hard work and watch, give feedback on, and reflect on the experience of their first video production project. All in all, the groups did fantastic job taking risks, troubleshooting, and trying something new. A couple groups' videos could benefit from another round or two of editing, which they are welcome to do before their video is shown on the announcements.
There is no GATE next week due to Election Day, but after that, we will start a unit comparing personality and abstract art. We will practice deep thinking through introspection as well as reading comprehension and annotated reading skills.

Question of the Day: What is good and bad about working with different people?
Today the class started with a quick neuron review before moving on to their big work of the day. We watch this brain anatomy video and took notes on the 17 parts of the brain that he taught about. Then students molded a cerebral cortex model from playdough and used it to identify the location and function of the brainstem, cerebellum, frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe, and temporal lobe. We talked a lot about brain word morphemes and made Morphology+ cards for the words "cere" (Latin meaning brain), "hypo" (Greek meaning low or below), and "temp" (Latin meaning time.)
Morning Discussion Questions
Today we started our new unit focused on the questions "Are spiders artists?" and "Are spiderwebs art?" After our morning meeting and weekly discussion questions (pictured below), the students filled out a pre-assessment on their digital portfolios. (linked below) They then lined up in a continuum between the options "Spiders ARE artists" and Spider ARE NOT artists" and practiced defending their claims.
Next, the students practiced analyzing some abstracts art (visible on the class slideshow link below under Week 10) and shared what the noticed, wondered, and what it reminded them of or what emotions it made them feel. They also watch timelapse videos of a spider web being built and a abstract painting being made.
After choice time, the students filled out a double-bubble map comparing and contrasting spider webs and abstract art and also added them to their digital portfolios. If they finished early, they created their own abstract art pieces ion their digital portfolios.
Next week, we will dive deeper into abstract art and artists to deep the students' understanding of what makes art art and who is an artist.

Some of the district's other pull out GATE programs serve higher-need communities and aren't able to secure many funds for their programs due to the nature of voluntary donation systems. These teachers regularly pay for project supplies out of their own pockets. If you feel led to donate, please consider blessing these deserving students and teachers by giving to their programs. A few Lowell families donated to these programs last year, and they made a huge difference! Lowell family donations were actually the ONLY donations Garfield received last year. Thank you so much!
The programs most in need are [GARFIELD/GATE/TUCKER,KATIE], [PIERCEPARK/GATE/ALEXANDER,LEONA], and [MOUNTAINVIEW/GATE/WELLER,LYNNETTE]
