Our day started by joining a school-wide theatrical performance by the Idaho Theater for Youth performance of Alice in Never Land, a mash-up story where Alice is a detective who travels between her world and Never Land to solve the case of Peter Pan's disappearance. The show included interesting puppetry, stagecraft, and costume design. After the performance, students practiced combining some of their favorite things through a dice-rolling game. We especially got a good laugh out of the idea of a Hamilton Minecraft mash-up.
In the afternoon, some students worked on updating their digital portfolios and all students learned a new multiplication game called "Choosing 5s and 10s." This is another Connect 4 style game but students must roll two dice, choose one of dice numbers, and then choose whether they want to multiply that number by 5 or 10 to choose the number where they place their token on the board. This was a fun challenge that upped the complexity from the similar Double Double game we played a couple weeks ago.
During Free Choice, it was also great to see how many students chose a non-computer activity despite it being a computer Free Choice week. We had students drawing, sewing, and knitting. It is always fun to see little hands at work!
MAY 12th is the last day of GATE for the 2nd/3rd class. Students are welcome, but not required, to bring an extra snack for themselves or to share with our class of 21 students on this day. I can't believe summer break is almost here!
Please have students return GATE Library books ASAP. Thank you!
Thank you so much to everyone that has donated to the Lowell GATE Classroom Fund this year! Your donations have purchased 2 drone kits, tons of art and engineering supplies, 5 field microscopes, and 5 huge Lego sets! I have my eye on some more Rubik's cubes (thank you to the family that donated some old ones!!), math/strategy challenges, and some storage bins that better fit the cabinets.
Please click on the link below to donate to my Boise Foundation Account.
(I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
