Today was our fractal-iffic grand finale! We started the day with a huge piece of work called Pascal's Sierpinski Triangle. The students had to use addition to fill in the cells of a Pascal's Triangle. This was challenging work, but the students rose to the challenge, and most students surpassed their goal! The really wild thing about Pascal's triangle, is that if you shade in all of the odd numbers, it creates a Sierpinski Triangle! AND, if you add the rows on a diagonal, the totals equal the Fibonacci sequence. 🤯 If students finished this work early, they added fractal and Fibonacci-inspired artwork to a page with the Emily Bronte poem "Fall, Leaves, Fall."
After recess, we celebrated a classmate's birthday with a treat and read the book Blockhead: The Life of Fibonacci. It has also been lovely seeing the excellent choices that the students have made for their Choice Time work this year. They are choosing challenging and creative work as well as working toward goals that take multiple weeks to accomplish. Keep it up, 2nd graders!
Our last mind-blowing moment of the day was checking out this video about the Chaos Game. If you haven't heard about this... buckle up! It's incredible, especially after everything the 2nd graders have been studying. They only got to watch the first couple minutes, so it could be fun to watch the whole thing with your 2nd grader.
The next time I will see the 2nd graders is October 28th due to testing next week and no school the following two Fridays.
... due to the Facilitators providing GATE screenings at high needs Title One schools across the district. This is important work to help identify gifted children from under-served populations that might otherwise go unnoticed and not have their exceptional needs met. Thank you for understanding!
Thank you so much to all of the families that have donated allergy-friendly snacks for the 2nd and 3rd graders who don't have lunch until 12:45pm and 1:00pm! We should be all set for the year for the students that have allergies. If you happen to come across a screaming deal for less expensive, non-allergy-friendly snacks, we could still use some of those on back-up.
As we begin our school year and face new challenges, we are seeking new ways to enrich your child's education both in person and virtually. Our current wish list includes a set of classroom cameras (~$100 ea), Rubiks Cubes ($12), and a hand-held vacuum cleaner! I just put in a grant application to get 6 iPads (and accessories) for our classroom, so I will cross my fingers! Please click on the link below to donate to my Boise Foundation Account. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THOSE WHO ALREADY DONATED!
IT WILL BE PUT TO GOOD USE RIGHT AWAY!
(I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
