This week in GATE, the 6th graders worked on various steps of their leadership project. Our first two local professional interviews took place! Over the next couple weeks, each student will conduct an interview with a professional associated with an industry that interests the student. They have made connections with all sorts of locals with experience in aeronautics, entrepreneurial endeavors, restaurant management, video game design, and more!
While they aren't conducting interviews, the students are sending professional emails, researching their industry of interest, and creating interactive presentations for their classmates. The next step on the process will be to plan a student-led field trip or two that helps us take a deeper dive into some of the industries the students have been studying.
Question of the Day: How do you know if you have picked the best level of challenge for you?
This was the first work week for the environmental PSA project. The students had their storyboard finalized and they started editing and filming their PSAs. Some groups learned that they needed to simplify their original plans, and some groups realized that in order to make their work pop, they need to dig a bit deeper into the Learning Pit. I'm really excited how these projects are coming together and to share them with the broader school communities!

Question of the Day: How do you know if you have picked the best level of challenge for you?
This was a big work week for the 4th graders as they worked to complete their final ethics unit project. Most students were able to finish their advocate/activist research and get the information onto a poster or other creative project. This work should have been uploaded to Book Creator Portfolios. (linked below) Next week, the students will share, give feedback, and receive feedback on their projects based on the established success criteria. We will wrap up out intro to ethics unit and get a head start on our study of the human brain! This unit will end with an optional sheep brain dissection.
Question of the Day: Is being bored good or bad?
Today, the 3rd graders finalized their top 3 invention ideas and learned all about patents. We conducted a patent number scavenger hunt in the classroom and found quite a few of the classroom games and office supplies are marked with their patent numbers. The students then took to Google Patents and Google Shopping to see if their invention ideas are indeed original.
The next time we meet (October 24), the students will pick their final invention idea and create a Shark-Tank-style pitch to convince their classmates to invest in their invention.

Some of the district's other pull out GATE programs serve higher-need communities and aren't able to secure many funds for their programs due to the nature of voluntary donation systems. These teachers regularly pay for project supplies out of their own pockets. If you feel led to donate, please consider blessing these deserving students and teachers by giving to their programs. A few Lowell families donated to these programs last year, and they made a huge difference! Lowell family donations were actually the ONLY donations Garfield received last year. Thank you so much!
The programs most in need are [GARFIELD/GATE/TUCKER,KATIE], [PIERCEPARK/GATE/ALEXANDER,LEONA], and [MOUNTAINVIEW/GATE/WELLER,LYNNETTE]
