We had a fun day back after Spring Break. The 2nd graders started the day by reviewing human eye anatomy and learning a few new details such as the difference between rods and cones, what a blind spot is, and why our eyes sometimes look red in flash photography. They then played a Kahoot quiz until they felt very comfortable with the names and functions of the parts of an eyeball. The students' understanding of how an eye sees was assessed through poetry. They wrote a preposition poem that explained how the eye sees and some students performed their pieces for the class.
In the afternoon, I introduced an inquiry-based research project that we will start next week. Based on what we have learned so far, the students generated questions about eyes that they are curious about. Their questions ranged from animal eye anatomy to eye disorders to genetics. Next week, they will research to find an answer about their question and present it to the class.
Thank you so much to everyone that has donated to the Lowell GATE Classroom Fund this year! Your donations have purchased 2 drone kits, tons of art and engineering supplies, and 5 huge Lego sets! I have my eye on some Rubik's cubes, a full-sized microscope, and math/strategy challenges. Please click on the link below to donate to my Boise Foundation Account.
(I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
