For the last 2 weeks, the 4th graders have been exploring the question "what is fair?" and working through ethical dilemmas. They thought deeply and justified their level of agreement or disagreement to the following questions:
There is always a right or wrong choice in every situation.
If I believe something is wrong, then it is wrong.
If you break a rule/law, you should always be punished.
Next, the 4th graders sorted a variety of scenarios into Fair or Unfair and justified their answers. The students also used a multi-flow map to envision the potential effects of making differing choices when faced with an ethical dilemma. The grand finally of this ethical dilemma work was to map out the cause and effects of different ethical dilemmas and then perform the outcomes as skits for the class. This lead to interesting discussion and reflections.
This afternoon, as I presented at a district training, the students read the book That's Not Fair: Emma Tenayuca's Struggle for Justice. The guest teacher said she was incredibly impressed with the students' participation in discussing the lessons of the story!
As we begin our school year and face new challenges, we are seeking new ways to enrich your child's education. A big purchase, I have my eye on is a set of classroom cameras for the 3rd grade photography unit and to help other students with self-expression and documenting the progress of their project work.
If you would like to help fund our tech needs, supplies for students, brain puzzles, etc, please click on the link below to donate to my Boise Foundation Account. I upgraded and added a ton of classroom supplies this summer with donations from last year, so thank you so much for those donations! [LOWELL/GATE/GABRIELLI,AUDREY]
