Today was a day of learning new skills and time spent in the Learning Pit! The students were introduced to the digital portfolio platform Book Creator, which is where they will post reflections and work samples for their entire pull-out GATE career. You can check out their cover art designs and first reflection assignments here!
The students used this new experience as an opportunity to practice Learning Pit strategies, or "I'm stuck!" strategies. When they felt confused or stuck, they practiced the following strategies:
Take a deep breathe (or 3!)
Check my memory or the directions
Ask a classmate
Ask a 2nd classmate
Ask Ms Gabrielli
So often, students aren't used to being able to ask classmates for help; they think adults are the only people who could possibly solve their problem. They also don't like to sit in a state of struggle for very long, so by making strategies like these second nature, they can work toward becoming more independent and empowered problem solvers. (and help maintain the sanity of the adults in their lives!) As they master these strategies, we will add others to the list of options including things like trial and error, deductive reasoning, and apply past knowledge.
15+ 3+ shoe boxes (the ones that have the lid attached like a chest are best, but either work!)
30+ 20+ cardboard paper towel rolls
10+ 5+ cereal boxes
big bags of pretzels (for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd grade snacks)
big boxes of chewy granola bars (for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd grade snacks)
Thank you so much for the donations we have already received!! For reference, once class typically eats half a bag of pretzels per GATE day. The more students bring their own snack to class, the less need to be provided through donation. Thanks!
As we begin our school year and face new challenges, we are seeking new ways to enrich your child's education both in person and virtually. Our current wish list includes a set of classroom cameras (~$100 ea) and Rubiks Cubes ($12)! Please click on the link below to donate to my Boise Foundation Account. [LOWELL/GATE/GABRIELLI,AUDREY]
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THOSE WHO ALREADY DONATED!
IT WILL BE PUT TO GOOD USE RIGHT AWAY!
(I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
