The 2nd and 3rd graders started a poetry memorization project this week. They started the day by reading a book about the poet Shel Silverstein and reading some of his poems. We loved the humor in his poems! Students then chose their favorite of the selected poems to memorize using a strategy provided by the Mensa Organization. Each year at Lowell pull out GATE, students will memorize a poem, so if they stick around through 6th grade, they will carry a collection of poems in their memory to middle school. Memorization of classic poetry will begin in the 4th grade.
After working on some memorization strategies, students used watercolor pencils to create a piece of art connected to their poem. When students completed their art piece, they explored the classroom's collection of visual/spatial brain puzzles!
Next week is the last week of GATE until second semester!
Thank you so much to everyone that has donated to the GATE classroom! There have been several anonymous donors who don't get to receive a fun thank you card in the mail, so please know how much we appreciate your generosity. We have already been able to get power tools, craft supplies, and TONS of Lego bricks! Two new drones will also be added to our fleet in time for the 5th/6th grade drone programming project!
As we begin our school year and face new challenges, we are seeking new ways to enrich your child's education both in person and virtually. Our current wish list includes a set of classroom cameras, a Tello drone kit, Rubiks Cubes, graphic novels, and more enriching art and tech! (I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
