Today, the students started the day learning about how lenses bend light and magnify images. They also compared and contrasted the components of a standard microscope (which the design of has barely changed since the early 1800s!) and a Foldscope.
They then got to explore the class set of glass slides by attaching their Foldscopes to the class set of iPad minis, which makes them much easier to view and allows you to capture photos and videos. Unfortunately, we were surprised that the iPads have stopped being supported by the district, so we couldn't upload the image files to portfolios like the 5th graders could last year. 😭 We troubleshooted the best we could, and students added photos of their iPad screens to their Book Creator portfolios. I'll reach out to the district tech department to see if they have any spare iPads we can borrow or have. I also applied for a grant to get a few iPads to use as drone remote controls. I should hear back about that by the end of the week, so we'll cross our fingers!
After Choice Time, the 5th graders finished their day by starting the exploration phase of a microbiology research project! Next week, they will learn about the classifications of life, help craft a rubric/success criteria for the research project, and get to work!
I'm on the hunt for a few experts to join our class in person or via video chat. If you or someone you know would be interested, please let me know!
Professional(s) who use microscopy or microbiology in their work to teach the 5th graders about their job [Needed sometime before winter break]
A professional who know a lot about brains! (Bonus if you have any way to show the 4th graders a human brain...) [Needed sometime before winter break]
Someone who uses drones for their work (or potentially recreation) to talk about their job with the 5th graders (Bonus if you could fly for us!) [Needed during 3rd quarter]
The puzzle is getting close!!
Did you know that frog blood cells have nuclei?
It was requested that I include this photo in the newsletter. 🤦♀️
As we begin our school year and face new challenges, we are seeking new ways to enrich your child's education both in person and virtually. Our current wish list includes a set of classroom cameras (~$100 ea), Rubiks Cubes ($12), and a hand-held vacuum cleaner! I just put in a grant application to get 6 iPads (and accessories) for our classroom, so I will cross my fingers! Please click on the link below to donate to my Boise Foundation Account. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THOSE WHO ALREADY DONATED!
IT WILL BE PUT TO GOOD USE RIGHT AWAY!
(I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
