Last week and this week, the 4th graders worked on their Ethics social/emotional unit and their new main unit on The Human Brain! Their most recent ethics work centered around understanding the nuance between equality, where everyone gets the same thing, and equity, where everyone gets what they need. They examined drawings of two situations, one representing equality and one representing equity. The class was full of lots of rich discussions! The students were able to find some fallacies with the illustration and discuss it from different perspectives. Next week, they will be challenged to create their own illustration representing equity versus equality.
Students also started their study of the human brain! They are currently learning about brain anatomy. Students took a pre-assessment where they drew everything they knew about brain anatomy in the outline of a head. This will be used as a marker to compare to at the end of the unit as they complete the activity again. It will be cool to see the growth over the weeks. The students watched a video on brain anatomy and took notes as a teaser to what they will dive into in the coming weeks.
As we begin our school year and face new challenges, we are seeking new ways to enrich your child's education both in person and virtually. Our current wish list includes a set of classroom cameras, a Tello drone kit, Rubiks Cubes, graphic novels, and more enriching art and tech! (I'll start posting as soon as I have confirmed which students from each school are on the No Photo List. Thanks for your patience!)
