Hello, My name is Serah Florendo-Iboshi. I graduated from Pearl City High School. Then, I attended Leeward Community College where I got my A.A. in Liberal Arts. Spending time in nature is a huge inspiration and an integral part of my life. I'm a chicken mom! If I were an artist's tool, I would be a small paintbrush because I'm all into the details.
The nuclear family which consists of a mother, father, and child has been the hegemonic image of normalcy in media for centuries. This project challenges the dominance and overrepresentation of the nuclear family unit in children’s literature while representing the local, cultural context of Hawaiʻi. Research on this issue was conducted through the synthesis of academic resources and anecdotal accounts, an interview conducted with an elementary school librarian, and an analysis of a variety of popular children’s books. Findings showed that the evident lack of diverse family representation in children’s literature is prevalent and harmful to children’s emotional and educational development. A children’s book was created in order to address this issue. The book, Colors of Ohana, celebrates the diversity of family, while taking inspiration from local culture, Hawaiian mythology, and the native flora and fauna of Hawaiʻi.
The concept of creativity has come a long way. The Old Greeks would call those creative forces muses, other religions referred to them as God. Today people still mostly treat creativity as an aha moment outside the area of influence. However, just by looking at the creative process one can tell, that creativity and creative work is more than just that one "Aha-Moment" (insight). It is clear that generating ideas demands planning and preparation, identifying something of interest like a problem, an opportunity or a challenge, doing research. This then leads to thinking of a solution, allowing time to incubate and iterations before arriving at something “complete.” Students learn that hard work is what makes their ideas come to life and sticktuiveness is what helps them get better.
