My name is Joseph Payongyong. I was born and raised on the island of O‘ahu as Kapolei as my hometown. I graduated from Kapolei High school and immediately enrolled into University of Hawai‘i - West O‘ahu. I will be graduating with by BA in Creative Media with a concentration in Video Game Design and Development. If I was an artist's tool I'd imagine myself as an outliner pen, kind of like a sharpie. Reason being is because I love watching people think about their ideas and constantly changing it, but to me, I think its even better watching them lock it in. When you put a pen to a sketch, it is like you're saying "There's no turning back now" and I think this fits perfectly with my mindset of thinking "What's done is done, just be proud of it."
Video game development is a tough career path, as it takes extensive time and lots of creativity, especially if the game development team consists of only a few people. The individuals who are part of small game development teams, which consist of only a handful of people or just one person, are considered indie game developers and work endlessly to create games in hopes that their games are just as enjoyable and successful as triple A titles. As it may sound, indie game developers work extremely hard in developing and marketing their games. This process was very tedious for the first indie game developers decades ago, but now, modern technology has helped ease the stress and workload of these exceptional game developers. Digital distribution along with user-friendly game engines are exceptional tools that help indie game developers to be noticed more, allowing indie game developers to make well-polished games to be sold alongside other popular triple A games. Large video game companies, such as Nintendo and Valve, also support indie game developers by publicly posting instructions on what needs to be done for games to be featured on their digital storefronts.
The concept of creativity has come a long way. The Old Greeks would call those creative forces muses, other religions referred to them as God. Today people still mostly treat creativity as an aha moment outside the area of influence. However, just by looking at the creative process one can tell, that creativity and creative work is more than just that one "Aha-Moment" (insight). It is clear that generating ideas demands planning and preparation, identifying something of interest like a problem, an opportunity or a challenge, doing research. This then leads to thinking of a solution, allowing time to incubate and iterations before arriving at something “complete.” Students learn that hard work is what makes their ideas come to life and sticktuiveness is what helps them get better.
