Hi my name is Aiyana Sabuco. I was born and raised in Ewa Beach where I'm still currently residing in. I also graduated twice during 2022, once from Waipahu High School where I got my high school diploma and twice from Leeward Community College where I got my Associate's Degree in Liberal Arts. If I were an artist's tool, I would be a lighting reflector because I always try to look on the bright side. Personally for me, I enjoy being there for those around me and using my light personality to help cheer them up whenever they feel gloomy. Lighting reflectors are also used to brighten up the room, which actually relates to my Hawaiian name (Alohilani) that translates to brightness of heaven!
Although most people would easily consider Hawaii as a place of paradise, this is not the case for many Hawaiian natives and locals. Tourism has existed in Hawaii for the past 160 years, but it hasn’t always been beneficial in terms of the state’s cultural well-being. With millions of tourists flying in and out of the state every year, Hawaii is now experiencing over-tourism which is affecting how others experience this culture. There are many outside sources that influence harmful stereotypes about Hawaii, its people, and the art of hula dancing. Some of which are disrespectful and offensive to those who partake in this culture. This makes it very important that the people and businesses of Hawaii are working to ensure these cliches are being put to rest. It is the responsibility of locals to be caretakers of their culture in order to better ensure that it’s being authentically portrayed to those who come on vacation. However, it is also the responsibility of tourists to be more open-minded in order to better ensure that they leave with a deeper and wider understanding about the Hawaiian culture as a whole.
The concept of creativity has come a long way. The Old Greeks would call those creative forces muses, other religions referred to them as God. Today people still mostly treat creativity as an aha moment outside the area of influence. However, just by looking at the creative process one can tell, that creativity and creative work is more than just that one "Aha-Moment" (insight). It is clear that generating ideas demands planning and preparation, identifying something of interest like a problem, an opportunity or a challenge, doing research. This then leads to thinking of a solution, allowing time to incubate and iterations before arriving at something “complete.” Students learn that hard work is what makes their ideas come to life and sticktuiveness is what helps them get better.
