My name is Dexter Corpuz, I was born and raised on Maui. I graduated from Maui High School in 2017; at Maui High I was part of the arts and communication program, where I took graphic design since my freshmen year. I then went to UH Maui College and enrolled in their ACM Program and was there from Fall 2017 to Spring 2020. My creative media journey after high school started when I went to UH Maui College to be more versatile in creative media and picked up many skillsets like photography, video editing, and animation, along with strengthening my design skills which then I transferred to UH West Oahu. I also started being an educator for Maui High School. I became a substitute teacher and paraprofessional educator, where I assistant taught graphic design to high school students for Maui High Arts and Communication. I also started being production assistant for small indie films and doing freelance graphic design and photography, where I did creative work for people on Maui. I will be graduating with a Creative Media - General Creative Media degree. I would be the pen tool, as I love using Adobe Illustrator, and it has been my bread and butter; I am always crafty, clean, and precise with my line work, masking, cutting, or illustrating, and in my line work daily life and craft.
Competitions have existed since the beginning of time, and art competitions play many beneficial factors for both high school students and teachers. High school students lack self-confidence, lack social skills and don’t experience real-life scenarios at a young age. There lacks growth opportunity like art competitions in many high schools. This research project shows both students and educators can develop many outstanding aspects when preparing and entering competitions. High school students and educators come out as better self well-beings and gain many unique experiences, networks, and opportunities beyond the classroom setting when they are pushed and have the chance to showcase their work through their performance-based assessments.
The concept of creativity has come a long way. The Old Greeks would call those creative forces muses, other religions referred to them as God. Today people still mostly treat creativity as an aha moment outside the area of influence. However, just by looking at the creative process one can tell, that creativity and creative work is more than just that one "Aha-Moment" (insight). It is clear that generating ideas demands planning and preparation, identifying something of interest like a problem, an opportunity or a challenge, doing research. This then leads to thinking of a solution, allowing time to incubate and iterations before arriving at something “complete.” Students learn that hard work is what makes their ideas come to life and sticktuiveness is what helps them get better.
