Hi! My name is Kara Adan. I was born and raised in Mililani, where I attended Mililani High School. From there, I completed the Communication Arts program at Honolulu Community College and went on to work as a Graphic Designer for several years while doing freelance work on the side. I then received my teaching license in Career and Technical Education which allowed me to enter the Department of Education. Now I am completing my degree in General Creative Media here at the University of Hawai‘i - West O‘ahu. If I were an artist’s tool I would be the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. With the pen tool, you can create your path with endless possibilities. You can make them sharp, curved, open, closed, filled, large, or small. It shows that you can create different paths in your life that can always be shaped, edited, and refined.
Hawaii’s greatest source of revenue is generated from the tourism industry; earning the state billions of dollars each year. However, this comes at a great cost to Hawaii’s natural, cultural, and social resources. The very same factors that originally attract visitors are finite and have seen severe degradation over time. This essay discusses how positive change can come from within the community through early education (K-12). Incorporating sustainability practices early on will equip Hawaii’s future generations with the tools and knowledge to effect long-lasting environmental, cultural, and social change.
The concept of creativity has come a long way. The Old Greeks would call those creative forces muses, other religions referred to them as God. Today people still mostly treat creativity as an aha moment outside the area of influence. However, just by looking at the creative process one can tell, that creativity and creative work is more than just that one "Aha-Moment" (insight). It is clear that generating ideas demands planning and preparation, identifying something of interest like a problem, an opportunity or a challenge, doing research. This then leads to thinking of a solution, allowing time to incubate and iterations before arriving at something “complete.” Students learn that hard work is what makes their ideas come to life and sticktuiveness is what helps them get better.
