I grew up on the west side of the island of Kauai in a small town. I attended Waimea High school and continued my education at our local community collage, Kauai Community College. I was able to attain my Associates Degree in Creative Media then transfer to the University of Hawai‘i West O‘ahu. If I were an artist's tool I believe that I would be a charcoal pencil. This tool can be messy and unpredictable but it is also quite moldable and can be used to create some of the most beautiful pieces when in the right hands.
Hawaii, a gorgeous tropical travel destination that many frequent throughout the year, filled with amazing sites, luscious forests, and long white sandy beaches. This is Hawaii, the Hawaii that travel agencies tend to sell to visitors looking for a nice getaway. However, this island is inhabited by locals who practice traditions and a culture whose roots run deep throughout the islands. Although the tourism industry is accepted and encouraged because of the economy and the want to share this beauty, it is expected that there is respect for this culture throughout the duration of the vacation. One of the best ways that those who reside on these islands could ensure that the visitors are respecting the aina (land), culture, and people is by educating them before they even step foot onto Hawaiian soil. Kauai is one of the eight islands that comprises the Hawaii Island Chain, this small island alone has an incredible history and culture that most visitors are not exposed to. There could be a pamphlet, video, or program that is available to visitors before they come for their vacation to ensure that education is made accessible and easy for them. This excerpt will cover the beginning of tourism in Hawaii and how it has been sensationalized throughout the years. There will also be examples of how the culture of the Hawaiian islands could be balanced with tourism remaining as its main source of income. This paper will also dive into the understanding of what is being shared with the incoming visitors versus what should be being shared with them. What is being done about the population of tourists coming into the islands as well as what the locals think about it all will also be touched upon. There is much to cover about the history of sensationalism or romanticization of the culture in Hawaii and what should be done to educate the visitors about the true culture that inhabits the islands, in a sense we will be rediscovering Hawaii.
The concept of creativity has come a long way. The Old Greeks would call those creative forces muses, other religions referred to them as God. Today people still mostly treat creativity as an aha moment outside the area of influence. However, just by looking at the creative process one can tell, that creativity and creative work is more than just that one "Aha-Moment" (insight). It is clear that generating ideas demands planning and preparation, identifying something of interest like a problem, an opportunity or a challenge, doing research. This then leads to thinking of a solution, allowing time to incubate and iterations before arriving at something “complete.” Students learn that hard work is what makes their ideas come to life and sticktuiveness is what helps them get better.
