Aloha! My name is Mikayla Gaoiran. I was born in Honolulu, Hawai'i and grew up in Ewa Beach. I graduated from James Campbell High School back in 2020 under the Academy of Creative Media. I attended Leeward Community College, where I received my associate degree in Digital Media. I then transferred to UH West Oahu in 2022 to obtain my bachelor's degree in Creative Media. Throughout my education, I found my passion for videography and video editing. If I were an artist's tool, I would be a camera because I enjoy capturing moments that I can look back on. There are also so many things that a camera can do such as record, take photos, use lens filters, and perform long-exposure. The experiments and experiences are endless.
For quite some time, filmmakers have been representing Native Hawaiians in an inaccurate manner, which has led local audiences to express their negative notions. Some movies and shows include Aloha (2015), upcoming live-action Lilo and Stitch, Enemy Within (2019), Just Go With It (2011), 50 First Dates (2004), and Doogie Kamealoha (2021). These popular works are centered around Hawai'i and its people, and took part in the continuous misrepresentation issue by using actors and tangible components that are not part of Hawaiian culture. By analyzing these movies and shows, it has introduced the idea that the history of Hawaii, such as colonization, has also played a role in how Native Hawaiians are viewed. Furthermore, misrepresentation of Hawaiians in film has shown that Hawaiians are constantly being stereotyped and wrongfully seen as the representation that is portrayed on-screen.
The concept of creativity has come a long way. The Old Greeks would call those creative forces muses, other religions referred to them as God. Today people still mostly treat creativity as an aha moment outside the area of influence. However, just by looking at the creative process one can tell, that creativity and creative work is more than just that one "Aha-Moment" (insight). It is clear that generating ideas demands planning and preparation, identifying something of interest like a problem, an opportunity or a challenge, doing research. This then leads to thinking of a solution, allowing time to incubate and iterations before arriving at something “complete.” Students learn that hard work is what makes their ideas come to life and sticktuiveness is what helps them get better.
