My name is Brendan Kumasaka. I'm born and raised here in Hawai'i. I grew up in Mililani and went to Waipahu High School. I grew up playing baseball my whole life, up until i graduated high school. Now I like to go bowling, play pickleball and golf. I have 5 cats and have a gaming YouTube channel with 61,000 subscribers at the moment. If I were an artistʻs tool, I think I’d be a multi use brush pen because it reflects the mix of structure and creativity in my life. Growing up in Hawaiʻi, playing baseball, and now enjoying bowling, pickleball, and golf show my disciplined but relaxed side. My gaming YouTube channel and my five cats add to that creative, expressive part of me. A brush pen fits me because it’s flexible and can shift between different styles, just like I do.
This project looked at how everyday devices such as phones, tablets, and keyboards can quietly contribute to the spread of germs and bacteria. Since technology is such a big part of daily life for students, educators, and professionals, people are constantly touching their devices without realizing how quickly contaminants can build up and move from one place to another. The goal of this project is to bring attention to these risks and encourage simple and practical hygiene habits that can make a real difference. To do this, I created a social media campaign designed to share easy to understand information about device cleanliness and why it matters. The campaign uses engaging visuals, clear explanations, and relatable examples to help people see how small actions, like wiping down a phone or keyboard, can improve their everyday health. By making the content approachable and easy to share, the project aims to motivate people to adopt better cleaning habits and become more aware of how their devices affect their well being. In the end, this project shows that taking a little time to care for the technology we rely on can help create a cleaner and safer environment for everyone.
The concept of creativity has come a long way. The Old Greeks would call those creative forces muses, other religions referred to them as God. Today people still mostly treat creativity as an aha moment outside the area of influence. However, just by looking at the creative process one can tell, that creativity and creative work is more than just that one "Aha-Moment" (insight). It is clear that generating ideas demands planning and preparation, identifying something of interest like a problem, an opportunity or a challenge, doing research. This then leads to thinking of a solution, allowing time to incubate and iterations before arriving at something “complete.” Students learn that hard work is what makes their ideas come to life and sticktuiveness is what helps them get better.
For his senior capstone, Brendan created a cross-platform social media campaign to raise awareness about how everyday devices—like phones, tablets, and keyboards—quietly contribute to the spread of germs. Grounded in his research on contamination and hygiene, he developed clear, visually engaging posts that explain how quickly bacteria can accumulate on the technology we touch constantly. His campaign offered simple, practical cleaning tips designed to help people protect their health through small daily habits. By making the information relatable and easy to share, Brendan aimed to motivate better hygiene practices and highlight how caring for our devices contributes to a cleaner, safer environment for everyone.
