Hello, My name is Lauren Mueller. I was born and raised in Honolulu and attended Moanalua High School. I went straight to college, then left and worked full-time for a few years. I decided to go back to school once I found something I really wanted to study: audio engineering. Honolulu Community College offers a degree program for it under MELE, which stands for Music & Entertainment Learning Experience. After graduating from the audio engineering track in the spring of 2021, I transferred to UH West to pursue a bachelor's degree in creative media. Here, I rediscovered my childhood passion for video editing under Professor Samantha Farinella, and founded a RISO called WOBA -- the West Oʻahu Broadcasting Association. We host open mics at UH West! I have run the sound at each event, and organized most of them. I would be a camera, because it is the ultimate tool for capturing a unique perspective. With my camera, I can relay my worldview to others.
Documentary is a genre of film that is well-suited to encapsulating pro-environmental, political, or social issues. Documentary filmmakers can utilize knowledge of rhetorical appeal, psychology, and personality when developing their film’s structure and narrative. This may increase the persuasive potential of their works. This research provides an overview of two models of persuasion, Aristotle’s modes of persuasion and Robert Cialdini’s principles of persuasion. It also explores the elaboration likelihood model (ELM) in order to understand why individuals may respond differently to the same stimulus, in this case, a documentary film. Further, this research references Carl Jung’s psychological types, which account for the idiosyncrasies of human behavior by theorizing about how different “types” of people perceive the world and come to their decisions. Studies have shown that personality has an effect on how a persuasive message is received. Personality can also affect the political stance of an individual: personality type is correlated with political ideology. This information can be used by filmmakers to target certain viewers who may initially be opposed to the stance expressed by their film. Documentarians can apply knowledge of personality and persuasion to the creation of their activist films, in order to increase the chance that it will change viewers’ minds.
The concept of creativity has come a long way. The Old Greeks would call those creative forces muses, other religions referred to them as God. Today people still mostly treat creativity as an aha moment outside the area of influence. However, just by looking at the creative process one can tell, that creativity and creative work is more than just that one "Aha-Moment" (insight). It is clear that generating ideas demands planning and preparation, identifying something of interest like a problem, an opportunity or a challenge, doing research. This then leads to thinking of a solution, allowing time to incubate and iterations before arriving at something “complete.” Students learn that hard work is what makes their ideas come to life and sticktuiveness is what helps them get better.
