AirDrop is a proprietary Apple feature that enables you to wirelessly send files between Apple devices.
Contrary to popular belief, it does not operate over the District wireless. Instead, AirDrop leverages a combination of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to establish a peer-to-peer connection between devices. When you initiate an Airdrop transfer, your device first uses Bluetooth to discover nearby devices and establish an initial connection. Once the connection is established, Airdrop switches to Wi-Fi to transfer the actual data. This dual-mode approach allows for both convenience and speed, as Bluetooth handles the initial handshake, while Wi-Fi takes care of the heavy lifting.
However, AirDrop doesn't appear to work reliably when Apple devices are connected to enterprise (non-home) wireless networks. We don't know why, because that information is not made public by Apple. We continue to investigate the issue.
