Commander Report 05/10/2013 Christine Redmond Today was another great day on Mars! Our day's activities started at 12:30am as the crew headed out to the observatory to take a look at the night sky. The night sky was stunning! Steffan was able to direct our telescope so we could see Saturn and the black eye galaxy. The crew headed back to the Hab to get some sleep before our sunrise EVA. Shelby and Chrissy exited the airlock for EVA 7 at 6:20am. Schumann got up early as well to work Hab Com. Hiking up the ridge was a challenging EVA but we were able to successfully set up our radio repeater at the top of the ridge. We are hoping that this new setup for our repeater will give us a longer range of communication for future EVAs. Shelby and Chrissy returned to the Hab and prepared a large pancake, hash brown and bacon breakfast for the crew. Our planned afternoon EVA had to be postponed while our mission support team provides us with additional support on our drop test EVA. Due to the change of plans, the crew had another day to accomplish great things in the hab. The crew worked on several 3d printing projects including printing a container for one of our upcoming evaporation experiment EVAs. Steffan and Schumann also set up our second 3d printer. It is great to have two printers now since we have a lot of printing to do this coming week. The crew has been carefully monitoring our water usage by recording the water tank levels after every water use. We are hoping this will help us target where we are using the most water so we can better conserve this resource. We have a white board full of data which Shannon is putting into an excel spread sheet now. The results have been surprising so far as it seems the toilet is currently the biggest water draw accounting for almost half of our water usage each day. We plan to record more water usage data tomorrow. Now the crew is settling in to an evening of submitting reports, playing Settlers of Catan and hopefully getting to view another beautiful clear night sky.
