Purpose:
Objectives and plan overview (please comment on pre-EVA expectations):
The EVA team consisted of Oleg Abramov (leader), Yajaira Sierra (navigator & stenographer) and Sian Proctor (scientist). The main objective of this pedestrian EVA was to explore a large mesa approx. 1.4 km southeast of the hab at UTM coordinates 12s 0519362 4250196, and logged in the Hab's HALp database as waypoint 30. Examination with binoculars from the hab's windows suggested the presence of different lithologies than those near the hab, and crew 121 reported seeing small caves in the area. We also planned to examine the geology between the hab and waypoint 1, as well as collect samples of representative units.
Round-trip distance was estimated as 4 km, including exploration of the site, and a duration of approx. 2 hours was estimated. A departure time prior to 1400 was planned.
Narrative:
The crew's departure was delayed by several equipment issues. The crewmember originally assigned backpack #3 could not achieve a good fit because the straps were non-adjustable. Backpack #2 was used instead. One EVA team member put on a non-functional backpack (#4) due to a miscommunication. Only two radios known to be reliable from previous EVAs were available; other units were questionable or known to have issues. EVA team lead elected to take one of the questionable units to expedite departure.
The team exited the airlock at 14:24, approximately 30 minutes behind schedule, and immediately proceeded on a southeast heading direct to waypoint 1. Due to the late start, the team walked briskly, reaching the base of the target mesa at 14:53. In an attempt to find an access route to the summit, the mesa was partially circumnavigated in the counterclockwise direction. The crew climbed about 25 m up the south slope of the mesa, but it was judged too steep to continue. Two rock samples were collected; one of the conglomerate blocks strewn on the west slope of the mesa, and another of a quartzite layer within the mudstone on the south wall of the mesa.
The team started back to the hab at 15:13, at a slower pace than the outbound traverse. This allowed for a more thorough geological examination of the terrain. Shortly after starting the return traverse, the lead's radio lost its ability to receive transmissions. This fact was communicated to HabCom and the rest of the EVA team. The team stayed close for the remainder of the return trip, and the lead continued making position reports to HabCom.
Due to warmer outside air temperatures, a significant traverse distance, and elevation gain and loss during the traverse, and a small but steep climb at waypoint 1, approx. 1 liter of water per crewmember was consumed.
