Commander Report
01/01/2013

Today was a little less eventful, which was nice after the past few days. The crew enjoyed a
bit of a break from the non-stop business of our first three days on Mars. We did complete data
collection for several studies, but we did not go out on an EVA today. This morning Carlos began his
exercise study by having the crew complete a morning workout. Later tonight he will be collecting
data on the crew’s stress levels to see whether exercise has an effect on stress in an isolated and
confined environment.
Following Carlos’ data collection, the crew got cleaned up and began cooking breakfast. Eric
decided to change up the normal pancakes by adding chocolate chips this time, which was delicious.
Carlos made more homemade bread today and the crew devoured every last bit of it in no time. The
bread maker is definitely one of the crew’s favorite things here in the Hab. After breakfast, half
of the crew went out to the GreenHab to care for their plants. The rest of us stayed behind wishing
that we could be in Amy’s experimental group so we could go out to the GreenHab as well. Instead,
Carlos got out the microscope so we could take a closer look at some of the rocks we picked up
during our EVA yesterday. We saw some pretty interesting things and are looking forward to
collecting more samples during future EVA’s to analyze.
After Amy’s study, we completed other miscellaneous tasks around the Hab while listening to
Jazz music for Carolyn’s study. The rest of the afternoon was spent catching up on reports,
cleaning, and other projects inside the Hab. Noah and Carlos are orienting themselves with the
rover, so that the crew will be able to take it out tomorrow during our second EVA. We are also
hoping to be able to go out to the Observatory for some star observation either tonight or tomorrow
night.
Currently, dinner is being made and the crew is busily finishing up their reports for the day.
Tonight we will hopefully get all of our reports done early enough to either go out to the
observatory or watch a movie. We still have not had a chance to watch Apollo 13.

Commander CheckIn Report

Crew Physical Health:
The crew was feeling a little rough this morning (sore throats, itchy
eyes, nasal congestion, and headaches), but as the day went on they
all began feeling a little better.
Hab Maint:
The only maintenance completed today was to fill the loft tank twice. Tomorrow, the plan is to work on fixing the GreenHab propane problem based on the recommendations by mission support.
Rep Sched:
The Commander will be reporting on the status of the crew, what we have accomplished today, and other interesting things that have taken place. We plan to go on our second EVA tomorrow, so Carlos will be submitting our EVA plan. The crew Engineer will also be submitting her daily report, and the Health and Safety Officer will report on the current health of the crew. Lastly, there was a change in the science report schedule as Noah decided to submit his science report yesterday and Carolyn chose to submit hers today. Lastly, Amy chose to submit a second science report to update mission support on the status of the plants even though it wasn't required.
Tomorrow Plan:
Tomorrow Crew 121 plans to go out on another EVA as long as the weather cooperates. We will also be completing our normal data collection for Eric and Chelsea’s research. Also Carolyn and Noah will both be having experimental days tomorrow, so the crew will be listening to music for Carolyn’s research and will be playing single player electronic and board games for Noah’s research.

Support Req:
I forgot to include a request for more herbal tea on the list I sent in last night. We are almost completely out of Mint tea and we finished the last of the Apple Cinnamon a couple of days ago. Any flavor of herbal tea would be greatly appreciated – we aren’t picky.
