Commander Report

Today we began our first EVA emergency simulations. The crew was able to get a good appreciation of
the challenges involved with transporting an injured EVA crewmember with the spacesuits on. The crew
observed that transporting the patient in the prone position was not recommended, and a safer
approach is for the patient to be placed on a stretcher in the supine position. The crew utilized a
modified stretcher, which incorporated an area where the Portable Life Support System (PLSS) is able to fit through, allowing the
patient to lay flat on his/her back. The crew then tested an ATV concept where a stretcher was
placed on the back of an ATV for longer distance emergency transportation. The ATV concept also
incorporated a cover, which protected the crew from the environment (especially sunlight) during the
transportation back to the habitat. The crew worked extremely hard during these EVAs. They were all
physically demanding, but they all performed extremely well. I want to emphasize that during all EVA
simulations we placed safety above all, and in fact, we actually stopped the first EVA when the
injured patient was in the prone position, because she complained that the PLSS was weighing to
heavy on her. After our EVAs were completed, we had a very delicious lunch and enjoyable
conversation afterwards. These opportunities are always welcomed, as they provide us an opportunity
to get to know each other on a more personal level. After lunch we spent several hours preparing the
equipment for tomorrow’s EVAs. Once again, the whole crew worked really well together and came up
with an ingenious method to modify the wheeled stretcher. We will report tomorrow whether the
concept is a success. Last but not least, today we welcomed Cristina Carranza, who is writing a
story on our crew. From the get go, Cristina asked us a lot of good questions about the habitat and
took many pictures of our EVAs; Cristina will be back tomorrow to continue her reporting. We’re all
in good spirits and looking forward to another productive day tomorrow.
