Purpose:
The EVA crew consisted of Simon Engler, EVA team leader, Angelo Vermillion , navigator & stenographer, and Kate Greene, scientist. The fourth excursion of Crew 122’s MDRS mission, this was the first ATV EVA, which was designed to explore the surrounding area to the North of the habitat, collect samples, and test out the reliability of the ATV vehicles.
EVA team leader intended to test out the clear path Husky robot by using it as a sample transport for a second field test. The Navigator & stenographer intended to get a feel for the surrounding area and try to spot areas for future EVA interest. The Science officer intended to collect samples of interesting rocks in the area.
Narrative:
Upon exiting the airlock at 14:17, crew member Simon Engler began using the Clear path Husky robotic platform in the area immediately in front of the habitat. Simon Engler field tested the robot acting as a sample collector for a second field test. On board cameras recorded the view from the robot webcam. Subsequent EVA will have the robot being operated from inside the habitat if webcam view is sufficient.
The EVA team then mounted the ATVs and departed for WP1 at 14:54. En route to WP2, the Navigator & Stenographer ATV stalled and would not start. After some investigation it was discovered that loose connectors on the batteries were responsible. The connectors were attached and the ATV functioned well again. The group continued north until 15:25, at this point it was realized that the group would not be able to reach the destination point and be able to return to the habitat prior to 16:00. Also, radios were no longer communicating with MDRS. The decision was made to return to MDRS. The EVA scientist decided to take the opportunity to take samples, and collected rocks two strata layers that represent the major rock layers in the are.
Radio contact was re-established with MDRS at 15:50. Upon returning to MDRS, the robot was collected and placed in the airlock. The EVA team entered the airlock at 15:52.
