Commander Report

We began the day after an as usual short night. Today marks the mid-term of our stay on Mars.
Originally we had planned a nice relaxation evening - for a change - but the bunch of work will
likely not allow that. However, we did a lot of good work done. Ayako almost finished her Human
Factors experiment regarding stress levels in this special environment.
Interacting with a media team at Earth, we began doing some media shots while on EVA, following
their instructions regarding what kind of pictures they wanted to have. Besides this publicity
activity, we of course did a lot of science as well. As usual the geologists were "sampling away".
It is fascinating how you begin seeing the landscape in their eyes. Instead of "dead stone", there
are suddenly rivers and streams, moving stone, sand and minerals around and form the landscape.
During the EVA I took pictures for comparison with the old data of Gale crater. Even though I have
been around here now for some time and did a lot of EVAs, the landscape does not stop to fascinate
me. It is full of history, traces of once was, if you just look right. The shapes and colours are
so alien and new, this is truly another world.
As usual, upon return of the EVA, our rover engineer/ newly named quartermaster surprised us with
freshly baked crisps made of dried potatoes. And we will have pizza tonight.
Spirits are high as usual, despite little sleep. The group dynamic stays as good as ever, you do
not recognize that we know each other only for a short time. Looking forward to the rest of the
mission.
