Purpose:
The objective of EVA #4 was to complete assembly of the wind power
turbine at coordinates 12S 0518324 E 4250736 N (NAD 27). Due to
difficulties with driving the stakes into the ground, the EVA #3 was
incomplete and needed to be completed in a second, back-up EVA. To
finish assembly of the wind turbine, the EVA team needs to finish
driving the stakes, and then erect the assembled turbine tower. Upon
completion of construction, the electrical system would be connected.
Narrative:
EVA team #4 consisted of Douglas Trent as lead, Matthew Schumann as
navigator, Steffan Slater, and Shannon O'shea as support. The team
departed out of the airlock first, at 9:55 AM. The team began to dive
the stakes into the ground. These took roughly an hour and a half to
install due to the very firm soil. However, this also provided a very
firm tie down to support the wind turbine guylines. Communications
with the Hab command was lost due to a power failure at the Hab at
11;35 AM. However, the EVA proceeded as normal because of its close
proximity to the Hab, as well as safety concerns for the
halfway-assembled wind turbine support guylines. When the power
failed, the wind turbine was upright, but only half of the guylines
were tightened. The HSO decided to extend the EVA slightly past 2
hours due to safety concerns from a turbine collapse. Despite the
power/comunication failure, as well as extending the EVA, the wind
turbine construction was completed and the team returned to the air
lock at 12:05 PM.
