Purpose:
EVA 8A
Objective/Procedures: Four crewmembers evaluated transportation of injured patient with a four-wheel stretcher a distance of 40 feet up a 30 degree slope. The rope was pulled by an ATV at the top of the hill.
EVA 8B
Objective/Procedures: ATV pulled four-wheel stretcher configuration a distance of ~2 miles on flat terrain back to the habitat. EFRT tied a 6’ rope from the ATV to the stretcher.
Narrative:
EVA 8A – Four-Wheels (small) EVA Emergency Transportation with ATV – Up 30 deg Slope
Participants:
• Injured EVA crewmember: Andrea Lazarte (EV1)
• EVA First Responder Team (EFRT): Monica Abarca (EV6), Humberto De las Casas (EV5), Eiji Onchi (EV2), Saul Trujillo (EV4)
• Out-of-simulation: Alex Diaz
Timeline:
• 05:54pm – EV1 placed on stretcher in prone position
• 05:55pm – ATV started pulling rope up slope
• 05:55:32pm – EV1 reaches top of slope
Results: ATV was driven at a very slow rate for patient comfort. Patient noted that transportation to the top of the hill was relatively comfortable; a recommendation is to place a stopper at the bottom of the stretcher so that patient does not slide down as the stretcher is pulled up the hill.
EVA 8B – Four-Wheels (small) EVA Emergency Transportation with ATV – Flat Terrain

• Out-of-simulation: Alex Diaz
Timeline:
• 06:32pm – EV1 placed on stretcher in prone position
• 06:33pm – ATV started pulling stretcher
• 06:51pm – ATV reaches habitat
Results: ATV was driven at a very slow rate for patient comfort. During the transportation back to the habitat, the rope kept getting tangled with the stretcher wheels, mostly on turns. Rope entanglement was much less frequent during straight terrain. Patient noted that being pulled by the ATV on flat terrain was comfortable.
