Commander Report

Today was a very exciting day for Crew 121. The crew had much less in the way of data
collection to complete today; however, they had a much longer EVA than the EVAs conducted
previously. Today’s data collection included interviews and completing questionnaires for Eric’s
research, completing questionnaires for Chelsea’s research, and listening to music while having
vitals taken for Carolyn’s research. Today classical music was played for Carolyn’s study and the
crew especially loved listening to the Apollo 13 soundtrack.
Following the morning data collection, the EVA team went downstairs early to begin getting
suited up for their EVA. The crew’s excited chatter filled the Hab as well as the sounds of Noah and
Carolyn singing Bohemian Rhapsody to pass the time while getting ready to leave on their next
adventure. This would be the crew’s biggest EVA yet, and they couldn’t wait to get out to explore
the surface of Mars beyond the area within a 2km radius of the Hab. Once the EVA team was suited up
and ready to go, they had a quick briefing on how to safely operate the ATVs and then they were off,
or almost. After only a couple of minutes one of the ATVs began over speeding due to the rider
accidentally switching gears without pressing on the clutch. The problem was fixed, and the crew was
really off this time. It took them approximately 30 minutes to reach their first destination, where
they got off the ATVs and began walking to a dry creek bed in search of signs of previous life. The
crew found signs of life as well as many interesting rocks to bring back to the Hab for further
analysis. After spending 3 ½ hours exploring the harsh Martian environment, the crew returned to the
Hab famished and exhausted. Thankfully, the three crewmembers who stayed behind at the Hab already
had some delicious beef and broccoli stir fry and homemade rolls on the table ready to eat. The crew
scarfed down their food and went off to their staterooms for a short nap before they had to get back
to work.
Shortly after the crew awoke from their nap, a visitor came bearing gifts of more food for the
crew. As the crew began putting away the newly received items, they were ecstatic to see that they
now had bacon for breakfast and popcorn to enjoy while playing games for Noah’s study tonight. Once
the food was all put away, the crew began working on their daily reports. However, just as the crew
was getting started, Chelsea received an email with some very exciting news. We would be having
visitors coming to the Hab on Tuesday to film the crew as they go through their day to day lives on
Mars. The crew will be eagerly anticipating and preparing for the arrival of their guests over the
weekend by cleaning up around the Hab until it is clean as a whistle.
To conclude the evening after COMMS, the crew will be playing multi-player games for Noah’s
research. Tomorrow the crew members, who did not go out on EVA today, will be taking the ATVs out to
an area that promises to be full of interesting geological features and beautiful views. Therefore,
the crew will be hitting the rack early tonight; especially since Carlos’ exercise study is
scheduled for 7:30 tomorrow morning. Overall, it has been yet another amazing day on Mars, with the
promise of many greater experiences to come.

Hab Maint:
The static tank was filled once and the loft tank was filled twice. The ATVs (#’s 1-3 and the CDR’s) were taken out for an EVA. ATV #2 needs oil and the CDR ATV still stalls frequently during cold start. There were no frozen pipes today, though the toilet is still not flushing right. It is very slow and the crew is still refraining from putting toilet tissue waste in the toilet.
Rep Sched:
Tonight’s reports include the Commander’s daily report, the Journalist’s report, an EVA plan and report, Chelsea’s Science report and the Engineering reports.
Tomorrow Plan:
Tomorrow we will be conducting data collection for Eric’s, Chelsea’s, Carlos’, and Amy’s studies. We have also planned another EVA for tomorrow afternoon utilizing the ATVs. The goal is to explore a quarry for signs of previous animal life.
