Our first full day in sim started with major communications problems.
The system was using up capacity even with the wireless router unplugged (meaning no one was online except HALp). Ase worked with support this afternoon to resolve the issue.
HughesNet claims their system shows us with plenty of capacity left, but our internal system showed it bleeding away. Ase and support finally got it to stop at 13 percent this afternoon.
Tristan, Dennis, April, Paula, and I went on EVA this afternoon. The goal was to wrap up many small issues relatively close to the hab. We surveyed the area close to the hab used for the University Rover Challenge and photographed it. We then did some drill training for April with the rock sampling drill tool on loan from NASA. The process of drilling can be done alone, but dumping samples from the drill collector to a sample tube is much easier with two people.
I set up a rig with a drill in a holster on one leg and a hydration pack with the iPad and drill sample collector hanging from the backpack belt on the other leg. This rig is rather heavy and should probably not be used for extended pedestrian EVAs, but works nicely while climbing by lowering the center of gravity below the waist. We climbed the Hab rim looking for gypsum to drill, but did not find any embedded in bedrock. We did a second drill exercise in sandstone laterally, and April now feels confident with the rig. This was also Tristan's first EVA ever, and mine this rotation.
I've worked out an EVA schedule based on the number of functional ATVs and backpacks. We should have 7-8 EVAs per person if the weather holds out, and be able to complete the 8 planned for EuroMoonMars by the last Friday in sim. I'm planning two EVA days and one lab day alternating for Dennis and Ase.
Tomorrow, we are planning an Endolith study EVA to the Lady Dunes.
The only major recurring issue has been bandwidth. Other than that, the team is beginning to run efficiently.
