> Purpose:
> The objective of EVA #3 was to assemble the wind power turbine at
> coordinates 12S 0518324 E 4250736 N (NAD 27). The location was
> selected for its easy access from the Hab, as well as ideal wind
> condition, not to high, but also out from behind the hills that
> surround the Hab. The plan was to pre assemble as many components as
> possible, such as the rotor head, the turbine blades, wiring, and
> guylines before the EVA, so that the primary objective for the EVA
> would be to erect the structural tower and assembled rotor head, and
> install the support guylines. Once installed, the electrical wiring
> would be connected to a battery for monitoring charge rates during
> various wind conditions during future EVAs.
> Narrative:
> EVA team #3 consisted of Douglas Trent as lead, Matthew Schumann as
> navigator, Steffan Slater, and Shannon O'shea as support. Due to the
> size and amount of materials required for the wind turbine, The EVA
> team was divided into two teams of two. Shannon and Matthew Departed
> out of the airlock first, at 11:05, with the tools. Douglas and
> Steffan followed at 11:23 with the remaining material for the wind
> turbine. Once the materials were transported to the build site,
> Douglas and Shannon began assembling the turbine tower, while Steffan
> and Matthew began setting up the electrical system. Once the tower and
> rotor head were assembled, and the electrical system prepared, the
> support system of guylines could begin to be assembled. This consisted
> of 8 ground stakes around the turbine tower, roughly 10 feet from the
> base. However, the team encountered above average difficulty in
> driving stakes into the local soil. Many different stakes were
> attempted, including screw types and standard wrought iron. Due to the
> difficulty in installing the ground stakes and the time spent
> investigating alternatives on site, the team was required to leave the
> assembly of the wind turbine incomplete after two hours. It was
> decided that more time would be required to install the ground stakes
> and finish erecting the turbine tower. Also, adverse weather prompted
> the team to gather supplies and return to the Hab. The EVA team
> returned to the air lock at 12:47.
