Date: 12/05/2012
Written by: John Reynolds
Crew physical status: No issues, 1 crew member has a cold
Time departed/returned from EVA: #1 1043/1232
Time departed/returned from EVA: #2 1435/1557
Brief Narrative of Field Mission Results: Road usability survey, road mapping, gps waypoint plotting and rock sample collection for Hab study and crew education.
Engineering/Hab maintenance: light Rover maintenance with installation of an extra mobile camera. Suit helmets repairs completed to internal vents, latch replacement to Helmet #2, Fuse replacement packpack #6 and normal engineering checks including static water tank refill. We had a planner generator power outage (diesel scheduled maintenance) which I kept from the crew and used this opportunity to simulate a real power failure. This was a good opportunity to practice this drill and to show what is involved in this situation. The crew were a little surprised but coped well.
Packages delivered to the Hab: None
Plans for tomorrow: 2 EVA’s: EVA #1 mapping, waypoint selection and Geography planning for future missions to the north west of the hab. Plan time is about 4 hours in duration at most starting in the morning. EVA 2 is much more local within direct line visual southwest direction up to 2kms on foot. 2 Person crew with mission commander leading. If weather permitting, Musk Observatory familiarization in night time scenario. Continuing Rover operations with future software development in mapping gps waypoints including optimizing network router for greater coverage. Coverage distance is limited to line of sight operation. If Rover function fails at any time then any EVA crew returning can effect recovery
Support requests: None
Miscellaneous: Crew moral has definitely taken a step up after today. As a treat, I cooked a slap up Beef Cottage pie topped with mash potatoes and cheese with a side of pea’s. The meal ended with an in house ice cream dessert with a choose of toppings. Smiles all around!!!
