Commander Report

We started the day with creating a daily routine schedule, and a task schedule for the entire two
weeks. This was done by the entire crew. John visited us around 10am and gave us additional
technical briefing (after Crew 121), and a short ATV training. Since we were not yet in sim at that
time, we used the opportunity to hike up to the closest ridge west of the hab for orientation
purposes.
After lunch we continued working on the daily schedule and the task schedule. We adjusted an
existing daily schedule that we received from Jean Hunter:
07:00: Workout, weighing, washing up, getting dressed
08:00: Breakfast (cook/cleanup)
08:30: Morning meeting
09:00-11:30: Research projects, odorant ID and patency tests
12:00: Lunch (cook/cleanup)
13:00-16:00: EVA, research projects, chores, downtime
16:30-18:00: Report preparation, dinner preparation
18:15: Dinner (cook/cleanup)
19:00-21:00: Comms, report editing, EVA planning, meal planning, evaluation forms/surveys, remaining
chores
21:00: Telescope calibration, star gazing, games, movies, etc.
22:30: Quiet hours begin
Compiling an integrated task schedule for the entire duration of the mission was quite a challenge
since there are many different tasks and research projects. We essentially had to balance: MDRS food
research, HI-SEAS food research (odorant ID, patency testing, photographing individual food
consumption), 6 different individual research projects, and then all the other activities typical
for an MDRS mission (EVAs, cooking, chores, reporting). Everything was carefully balanced over the
different days, and over the different crew members.
After finalizing scheduling we officially started the sim. No more non-EVA walks outside the hab are
permitted, and all research and data collection has started.
I worked in the Greenhab today, and organized the new supplies that were brought in yesterday
(aquaponics materials, seed trays, seeds, fertilizer, new plants, etc.) All plants in the Greenhab
were watered. A tray was filled with small watercress plants to allow them to root. Several small
plants from the last crew(s) died, and sprouted seeds have been rotting. These will be removed
tomorrow. Kale and collards are in excellent shape.
