Commander Report

Kent Nebergall
This morning we woke expecting 2-5 inches of snow, and instead saw
nothing but a slight frost on the ground at 6 AM. The storms
have left us alone so far, but we have yet another round of risk
coming later this evening.
We had a brief Google Chat conference with the European sponsors this
morning. Also, I sent in and got feedback for my initial
report on the drilling study. There is more to gather in the canyon,
and we may go back there to complete the data set, weather and
mountain lions permitting.
Tristan, Ase, Dennis, and Audrey took a walking EVA to get some
follow-up samples for their sponsors. They sent photos of some
areas near the hab for comment, and were told where to get 10 samples
for later analysis in Europe. They were done by 3:37.
Since we were expecting to be snowed in today (not literally, just
restricted from going outside and doing geology in space suits), we
are basically doing a lot of catch-up work. I’m taking a lot of
engineering photos of the hab structure, and I’m willing to forward
those to the engineering team later to keep on file as a current state data set.
At 4PM, we participated in a human/engineering factors study round
table run by Ase for one of the European sponsors. It largely
turned into post-mortem on everything that’s gone wrong over the
course of the mission, but that was productive in itself. We are
working as a very happy, healthy, and productive team after a number
of setbacks. We are enjoying our borrowed time when we
thought we’d be stuck indoors. It was unfortunate that the study went
over all human factors that went wrong, because a lot went
right as well, and that information is also valuable.
Tomorrow, we will probably take the rover out again to close any gaps
in Ase’s study. We may go back on foot to gather more drill
samples Friday. I also have to correct my UTM coordinates in a report
to the drill study sponsors. The theodolite default settings
and the ones for MDRS studies are slightly off of each other. This is
fine for waypoints but not good for sample locations.
