Thermal Analysis and Evaluation
By: Oleg Abramov
This report summarizes preliminary analysis results from the following thermographic datasets:
Telescope time series (sunset) - taken 1/22/13 between 5 and 6 pm.
Thermal images of the telescope and the dome were acquired every five minutes 5:07 and 5:32 pm to monitor the rate of cooling.
Ambient air temperature at the time of the survey was -3 C.
At 5:07, maximum temperature of the concrete pedestal was 3 C, maximum temperature of the lower dome was 0 C, and maximum temperature of the upper dome was -3 C.
At 5:32 pm, maximum temperature of the concrete pedestal was 1 C, maximum temperature of the lower dome was -2 C, and maximum temperature of the upper dome was -3 C.
At 5:10 pm, maximum temperature of the telescope base was 0 C, and maximum temperature of the tube was -1 C.
At 5:32 pm, maximum temperature of the base was -2, and maximum temperature of the tube was -3.
Thus, telescope and dome temperatures were close to atmospheric equilibrium at the time of sunset, having been in shade for approximately the previous hour.
More data temperature was collected using two Omega OMWT-TEMP15 wireless temperature sensors.
The Greenhab sensor indicated a minimum of 12 C last night, which is significantly higher than 4 C recorded the previous night.
The stateroom sensor recorded a temperature peak of 26 C at 8 am today.
