Commander Report
01/06/2013

Today was a day off for Crew 121 aside from Carolyn’s, Gisela’s, and Noah’s data collection
and the normal daily engineering and report writing tasks. This morning the crew was able to sleep
in and catch up on some much needed sleep. Once the crew had all finished getting ready for the day
and eaten breakfast, Carolyn began playing rock music for her study. The crew was then given some
free time before Gisela began her data collection. Her research involved recording interviews of
each crew member on their perception of the Hab design. She also had each person complete a written
survey of about the Hab. While Gisela interviewed each person individually, the rest of the crew sat
down to watch Apollo 13 and enjoy some popcorn. By the time Gisela had completed her data
collection, the movie was over and it was time for the crew to complete a few miscellaneous tasks
around the Hab before moving on to Noah’s data collection. For Noah’s research, the crew played
single player card and electronic games for one hour. The crew seemed to enjoy this time set aside
for playing games and didn’t want to stop. However, now it was time to get started on the evening
reports and cooking dinner. The crew was hoping to make some homemade sourdough bread to go with the
soup we will be having for dinner, but when looking for the flour, it was apparent that the flour
had already been completely used up. The crew mourned the fact that there would be no more homemade
bread for the remainder of the mission, but then set out to experiment with the tortillas as a bread
substitute.
Overall, it has been a fairly slow and relaxing day for the crew. Now the crew is feeling recharged
and ready to face another busy week full of EVAs, data collection, interviews with the Chinese film
crew, cleaning, and performing routine maintenance around the Hab. There is much to look forward to
during their last five days at the MDRS!
