Commander Report
01/09/2013
Chelsea Iwig
The crew woke up bright and early this morning at 7am for
Carlos’ workout, and until noon
Crew 121 was busy conducting their research. Also this morning, the
film crew came by again briefly
to record a little more video and to take pictures of the crew in
front of the Hab. Once they had
finished, they said their goodbyes and the crew sadly watched as their
new friends headed off to
their next destination. While the crew enjoyed a busy morning, after
lunch the day slowed
significantly as they didn’t have any more data collection scheduled
until evening and the crew had
decided not to perform an EVA today due to exhaustion and the fact
that only one ATV is currently
working properly. However, early in the afternoon, the crew was
excited to receive a package from
their director and his six year old daughter. The little girl had sent
the crew a letter and a
picture that she drew along with two little dinosaur toys named Little
Foot and Lizzie. The crew has
enjoyed taking pictures of the little dinosaurs in a variety of
different places around the Hab for
their director’s daughter. This gave the crew something to keep them
busy this afternoon and has
seemed to improve moral.
The crew enjoyed their favorite dinner again tonight which was
pasta with Pesto sauce. They also
finished up the last four kiwis from the bags of fresh fruit that the
film crew brought when they
came to visit. Now the crew is finishing up reports and listening to
the evening music session for
Carolyn’s study. Once COMMS is over, the crew plans to go back out to
the observatory tonight to
view a few interesting objects such as the Orion nebula and the
Pleiades cluster. The crew is then
looking forward to getting caught up on some much needed sleep tonight
because tomorrow will be a
much busier day as the crew begins to make preparations to leave their
temporary Martian home.

CommanderCheckIn Report

Crew Physical Health:
One crew member had a headache today and mentioned that he had been
getting them frequently and one crew member still has a minor cold,
but all other crew members are well.
Hab Maint:
The crew engineer continued servicing the ATVs today. ATV #1 is
running normally, ATV #2 needs a replacement battery as it won’t hold
its charge, and ATV #3 initially ran normally; however after a short
time it stalled. The engineer checked the charge on the battery and
found that it is also not holding its charge. The engineer suggests
that it needs a replacement battery. ATV #4 still stalls shortly after
start-up even though the battery was recharged and is working
normally. ATV #5 starts but stalls after releasing the choke. The loft
tank was filled twice.
Rep Sched:
Tonight’s reports include the Commander’s daily report, the HSO
report, an EVA plan, and the Engineering reports.
Tomorrow Plan:
Tomorrow we will be able to catch up on some much needed sleep as we
will not be starting data collection until 9am. Carolyn will be
playing classical music for her study and then the crew will eat a
quick lunch before starting to suit up for one final EVA before the
end of our session. Then in the evening we will be playing single
player games for Noah’s study. If there is time after Noah’s study, we
will hopefully be able to go out to the Observatory again. Throughout
the day, Eric will be collecting his sleep data and then before
turning in for the night, Chelsea will be administering questionnaires
for her study.
