Today John fitted the fan in the generator room to the green hab by trimming the existing wood frame and adding some extra wood pieces. I was told tonight that we were not supposed to use the fan there since it is needed if there are problems with the generator. There is another fan in the Hab that is the same and works. Is this required for the hab or can we use it for the generator room? I can look at taking the fan out of the green hab if required but I’m not sure about fitting the other fan that doesn’t have a guard.
David managed to get the rover working for a short time while the film crew were here but there were lots of problems and we couldn’t get it to run consistently. It took a few goes to get working since there were problems with the computer not loading properly and the batteries losing power. The first time it started working after a minute the rover would only move backwards and would make straining motor noises when trying to move forward but wouldn’t go. David managed to get it working a second time and it ran well for about 10 or 15 minutes. It then started having problems with the camera moving around erratically without commands being sent and then it took off with the wheels moving in various directions (e.g. ‘went crazy’). David had to chase after it and switch it off. It was lucky that the film crew were able to get some footage of it moving around and of me driving it from inside the hab before it stopped working. Unfortunately they didn’t get footage of the rover taking off by itself or David chasing it. David thinks the problems with the rover are that the computer is quite old and the batteries are possibly worn out. The cold temperature might be an issue too.
When we went on EVA today since only three of the suits were working David ended up using one of the non working suits. He said he wasn’t able to see well at all with it. Would it be possible for me to look at fixing one of the suits? If so any advice would be appreciated.
The door to the engineering airlock is very difficult to close since the door is hanging at an angle and requires lifting and slamming the door shut to close.
DG took a look at the toilet issue and said it looks like it was a serious job that might require an excavator. He didn’t say how long it would take or when it could be done so if someone could give us an update on that it would be appreciated.
Judd said to avoid covering the fan since heating could be an issue so I won't attempt the sound proofing idea.
