Astronomy
Summary: Last night was the first clear night of our rotation so I finally got to use the observatory. I had some trouble getting the telescope aligned but have been in consultation with Musk Observatory directory Peter Detterline to resolve the issue. Despite lack of alignment I was able to get images of Jupiter and observe through the optics. Alignment issues likely due to the telescope bolts not being clamped down from the last user.
Objectives: Test out observatory systems, begin to assess usefulness/completeness of online training videos.
Results: Images of Jupiter and four moons, better understand of observatory systems.
Lessons learned: Tighten down bolts that keep telescope from rotating before beginning use.
Plan forward: Determine whether alignment issue was due to loose bolts. Per Peter’s request, take images of M42 and M1.
Simulation Suit Temperature Logger Prototype
Summary: I took the prototype on EVA B this afternoon, with the device secured to the top inside of my pack and the wires run from the device through the back of my helmet and left loose inside my helmet.
Objectives: Test out prototype for usability and collect initial data set.
Results: ~ 3 hours’ worth of data that look reasonable.
Lessons learned: Device works properly and battery life is > 3 hours. Device is unobtrusive and adds negligible weight.
Plan forward: Collect more data on future EVAs that I take through the rest of the rotation.
