Commander Report

Today was another busy day, full of science and working with the film crew and photographer. In the
morning we prepared the schedule for the next week, and made sure we'll have enough time to gather
all remaining data needed to complete our studies. In the afternoon Csilla, Ayako and I hiked up the
ridge behind MDRS to sample concretions of the Dakota Sandstone, to compare to concretions we had
previously sampled from the inverted channels of the Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation.
Throughout the day, crew members took turns being interviewed by the film crew both inside and
outside of the hab. It was really interesting working with both the film crew and photographer, and
learning to think more in the way they do about framing the shot from various angles - this too is
important for science, especially in terms of capturing the context of a sampling site, ideally with
the proper sun angle to better illuminate the surface in question. It's fascinating to me how
frequently people from completely unrelated fields can learn from each other to enhance their own
work. We had a lot of fun working with the media over the past few days, but we look forward to
relaxing and watching a movie together tonight, sleeping in for an hour tomorrow, and then getting
back to our science full-force!
