Hans van ‘t Woud
11:17 am 100 F, 12 % humidity
- Fans are set at 65 degrees and are both running, had tos hut them off fora bout 20 minutes
for the film cres.
- Thanks for the cooking and harvesting suggestions yesterday, we will surely make use of it!
- The temperatures are stll rising, and and everything is drying up very fast. I moved some
dry plants (mint) to the shadow side. These are not doing particularly well, all the other plants
in the hab are. The swiss chards are beautifull!
5 PM 90 F 11% humidity
- Harvested two pots of Italian sprout mix, going to try to combine this with the pizza
tonight! Sprouts have been thoroughly rinsed.
--Communication with Shannon about the GreenHab march 2 1023:
Shannon: Are both fans operational? And at what temperature are they set? Please let us know
before the opening of COMMS tonight.
Also, we really need real temperature readings during the day. Please take some time today to do
this. Thanks so much.
Hans:
The fans are at 65 F and operational, inside temp at 11.17am was 104 F at 12 percent humidity.
Everything is really drying fast requiring a lot of watering.
Shannon:
What was the outside temp at that time? Let's try opening the tunnel side door. It may be secured
shut still and if it is, please make it operational once again. It is not cold enough anymore to
need the addition insulation at night, although you will have to close the door at dusk. Also, if
you are experiencing spring winds, you will have to be careful keeping it open.
I am copying Jesse Clark, the GreenHab Coordinator, on this email. Since this is the first season
that the GreenHab has been used full season as a greenhouse, we have anticipated having problems.
Between seasons, we will refit the GreenHab to address the problems we have uncovered in this
season.
In the meantime, do all you can do to protect the crops without breaking sim. Would shade cloth
help? Any other suggestions?
Also, you will have to water them more. MDRS is a desert. Having grown up in the Pacific
Northwest, where water and low humidity are NOT issues, it was a bit of a shock for me to adjust
my way of thinking to see water as a precious resource. You may have to water twice a day now.
It's going to stay warm for the rest of your rotation.
Thanks so much for the quick response. Let me know what you think we should do. I will be able to
bring supplies with me, if you have an idea for keeping the temp lower during the day. We are also
installing a new door at the tunnel end. Do you think it would benefit from having a fan installed
in it?
Hans:
Ok I we can unbarre the door towards the tunnel, about the watering, I can do that, but it is
quite a significant resource drain on our daily water usage. I have been keeping watering low as
possible especially with that in concideration since I do not want the crew to run out but indeed
we would have better growth with more water.
About the hab: there is quite an exposure to outside air (fans), which is making the inside dry
encouraging enormously fast evaporation, but indeed dampening the temperatures a little bit down.
Maybe indeed some kind of shade shield could (white cloth?) work, but I am not an expert on this,
and just keeping the plants alive . An other idea maybe would be to open the rubber door between
the front and the rear section?
About the door at the tunnel end, there is a fan above it, so just opening during the day might be
enough. I will by the way check out the direction of the fans. It would be an idea to have airflow
from the shadow side towards the front side? I do not know if that is already the case.
--end communication
- I now unsealed the door, I will open it when it gets too hot! I will also do temperature
readings during the day.
