What a day! That’s the best way that I can describe today; we accomplished so much. We woke up in
great spirits, had a delicious breakfast and awaited the arrival of the Salt Lake City (SLC) TV crew
(KSL5). The whole crew was able to participate in the interview, each member giving a briefing on
their areas of expertise on the habitat. We then invited the TV crew to observe one of our EVAs. The
report will air next week and we are all looking forward to watching it. Today’s EVAs were very
challenging; we attempted transporting an injured EVA crewmember on various types of terrains (i.e.
rough, medium, flat), which had been scouted and selected by crewmembers last week. We determined
that transporting a crewmember with a wheeled concept is significantly easier than just carrying the
stretcher. Since our EVA locations were relatively far from the habitat, we used the pressurized
rover to get us there. After a couple of EVAs we had to take a break in our simulation to eat a very
light lunch which we took in the pressurized rover, and then proceeded with additional tests.
Unfortunately, due to the distances in our EVA waypoints, we were not able to complete all our
planned EVAs today. Thus, the two-wheels (in parallel) stretcher configuration will be performed
tomorrow. We came back to the habitat in the late afternoon and the crew was exhausted. We put our
equipment away, ate dinner and started working on our reports. After all reports are in, we will
exercise for an hour and then call it a day. Time is flying by here at MDRS and it’s hard to believe
that we only have four more days in our crew rotation. We have a lot more work to do and we plan to
finish strong.
