Purpose:
Investigate the big fault plane that cuts of the NE side of the arm of the lith canyon to try to find more structural features in surrounding rocks as result of stress from the big fault. Walk down to seek for more endoliths in the gypsum dominated strata of the Summerville and Curtis formations.
Narrative:
After a very quick stop from the first part of the EVA with Paula, Ase and Dennis for re hydration and food we joined the EVA that Kent and April planned to the lith canyon. Ase decided she wanted to stay in the hab for a proper lunch and some research. Paula drove to the beginning of the canyon were Kent and April wanted to enter. Here I realized that for the fracture I needed to be at a more northeast part of this canyon. A quick look at the ipad maps showed that I could walk there on the same route that Kent and April were taking. Although Paula and Dennis were helpful in the drilling objectives of April and Kent, Dennis severely underestimated the walk through the canyon to the fault. It turned out to be more than 3 kmrs one way in rough terrain. What was mostly underestimated was the hills in the canyon which made the trail very hard. We had visuals on the fault but decided to walk back for it was not safe to continue to reach the objectives within daylight. We walked back and drove safely back to the hab. Very unlucky and a bit foolish from Dennis to think he could walk there. Lesson learned: Next time stick to the plan!
